Afternoon of the Elves by Y. York
Sara Kate is the girl everyone makes fun
of because she wears terrible clothes and shoes and she acts strange
most all of the time. It doesn’t help that she lives in a run down
house with a yard full of junk. Hillary thinks just like the other
children until the day that Sara Kate invites her over to see a village
built by elves in her back yard. Hillary’s fascination with the
village and all things related to elves opens the door to a very strange
friendship with Sara Kate. Hillary slowly discovers that not all
children live like she does and that something is seriously wrong in
Sara Kate’s house.
Painted Rainby Janet Allard
’Painted Rain’ explores the relationship between two boys in an
orphanage, on the verge of being separated by adoption. The younger boy,
an energetic non-conformist, tries desperately to draw out his older
roommate, who is an aspiring painter confined to a wheelchair that he
refuses to relinquish for leg braces. Both boys strive to live life the
way they want to live it and make their own choices, despite the
external pressures and expectations of a well-meaning social worker. As
the impending separation nears, these two ‘almost brothers’ struggle
to break through their alienation and isolation to find companionship
and connection.
